The Cumming City Council will look into impeaching one of its own.

During a called meeting Tuesday, council members voted 4-1 to appoint a three-member investigatory panel that will look into the possible impeachment of longtime council member Rupert Sexton. That comes after confidential information on city employees was released on social media.

A news release said the unauthorized release came after Sexton unsuccessfully sought a policy change during a Dec. 16 council meeting that would classify wives of council members as city employees so that they could get health benefits. The release quotes Sexton as saying that he was “going to do what I have to do.” Sexton could not be reached for comment.

The release said the panel will review the case in early January and then recommend to the council whether to move ahead with the impeachment process.
