Mayfield Road at Foe Killer Creek in Alpharetta will be closed this summer as a contractor replaces a culvert that has deteriorated beyond repair.

The Alpharetta City Council has awarded an $823,943 contract to The Dickerson Group Inc. for the work. It will be timed for the months when Fulton County schools are out on summer break, staff said in a report to the council. Mayfield is to reopen in time for the start of school.

Public Works will work with City Hall to distribute a detour plan.

A routine stormwater inspection found the failing culvert was causing sinkholes to form at the roadway’s edge and existing walls to buckle away from the pipe, staff said.

Dickerson will remove the existing culvert and install a new, bottomless culvert; replace the roadway and include bike lanes and sidewalks on either side of the street; and remove and preserve an existing pedestrian bridge for future use elsewhere, staff said.
