A Coweta County woman—and wife of a city councilman–is facing charges for allegedly stealing money from a parent teacher organization, deputies told Channel 2 Action News.
Jennifer Kee, who is married to Graniteville City Councilman Willie Kee, allegedly helped herself to $15,000 from the Glanton Elementary School PTO where she had served as treasurer. The money was to be used for new playground equipment at the Coweta County school, investigators told Channel 2.
Jennifer Kee turned herself in to Coweta County sheriffs Monday, but her friends and community were surprised by the theft.
“I was really shocked,” Jodie Latimore told the station. “It took years to raise that $15,000 and it was earmarked for new playground equipment.”
Latimore added that she had been friends with Jennifer Kee for years, and now feels betrayed.
Glanton PTO President April Lefebvre said she was saddened, shocked and devastated for the kids.
Because Jennifer Kee is married to a city council member, the Grantville police asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to get involved. Investigators told the station they don’t believe Willie Kee knew about the alleged thefts.
Jennifer Kee and her husband wrote a restitution check Wednesday to the PTO.
“I wanted to make sure that Jennifer cooperated with the investigation, which she has, and will continue to do, ensuring that restitution is made to PTO,” Willie Kee said in a statement.
Jennifer Kee is out on a $5,000 bond and will face theft charges, Channel 2 said.
