A Covington armed robbery suspect was caught at a DeKalb County mall after leading police on a chase Sunday afternoon.
The man, whose name has not been released, is accused of robbing the Fred’s Super Dollar store at 6179 Highway 278 in Covington, police said. An officer nearby spotted the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to pull him over, Capt. Ken Malcom with the Covington police said. The suspect refused to stop and continued to travel on I-20 westbound with police in pursuit.
The suspect exited I-20 at Turner Hill Road in Lithonia and abandoned his vehicle near Stonecrest Mall, Malcom said.
His efforts to elude authorities ended in Kohl’s.
“He ran into Kohl’s, grabbed some clothes and attempted to change in a fitting room,” Malcom told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
A loss prevention officer approached him and was hit in the face, but she held on to the suspect, he said. Others arrived to help subdue the suspect, who was taken into custody after police involved in the chase identified him.
A BB gun was found just outside the store and cash was recovered, according to Malcom.
Authorities from multiple agencies assisted with the case.
The investigation is continuing.
