City seeks Mableton antebellum house buyer

A buyer is being sought for an antebellum house in Mableton.

Owned by Smyrna and built around 1850, the Hooper-Turner House is at 5811 Oakdale Road and on the Cobb County Historic Register.

The River Line Historic Area also is interested in its preservation since the house is in what was the center of Confederate General Joseph Johnson’s River Line defenses of June and July 1864.

Farmers market to open in Smyrna

Walk Cobb registration through April 9

Free online registration for Walk Cobb continues through April 9 with the initiative running until April 26.

Hosted by Cobb2020, Walk Cobb is a part of Walk Georgia, a program through The University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension Service.

Last fall, Walk Cobb involved over 400 walkers on more than 100 teams, logging greater than 29,000 miles.

Mableton group, Cupid hold meeting

Expect Highway 78 delays Wednesday

The Georgia DOT plans to begin resurfacing 9.24 miles of U.S. Highway 78 beginning Wednesday, April 2. The three-month project will improve the driving surface from GA Highway 124 in Snellville to Tom Brewer Road in Loganville. Officials expect delays. County to ratify contracts, promotions

Gwinnett County commissioners are slated to ratify employment contracts and promotions for several key county administrators today. Phil Hoskins, the current community services director, will be the new deputy county administrator. Finance Director Maria Woods will become the county’s CFO. Forsyth law officers seek hit-and-run driver

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the driver of a hit-and-run vehicle who struck a pedestrian about 12:50 a.m. March 23. The 18-year-old female victim was hit while walking westbound on Ga. 316 near Ga.400, suffering non-life-threatening injuries, Sheriff’s officials believe the vehicle involved is a silver or light-colored 2-door Honda Civic, 2006-2010 model year, with damage to the front end, passenger side rear-view mirror and windshield.. Cherokee man dies in cycle crash

A Cherokee County man was killed in a Sunday afternoon motorcycle crash. The Georgia State Patrol says Michael Neil Young, 23, of Canton was eastbound on Ga. 20 near Weeks Road when his motorcycle left the road, striking a tree and then a building.

Alcohol is not suspected in the crash, which occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Young died after being transported to a hospital.

Chattahoochee cleanup this month

Volunteers seeking to participate in the spring cleanup of the Chattahoochee River have until noon April 9 to sign up.

The annual Sweep the Hooch event will take place April 12 at 27 sites over 60 miles, many located within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Some 550 volunteers hauled nearly 4 tons of refuse from the river in 2013.

Golden Games registration underway

Registration is underway for the 20th annual North Fulton Golden Games, which are open to all adults 50 and older. Opening ceremonies are set for 10 a.m. May 1 at Wills Park in Alpharetta, followed by competition through much of May.

Dunwoody city manager leaving post

Dunwoody’s city manager, who has been with the DeKalb County city since it incorporated five years ago, is stepping down.

Warren Hutmacher is resigning to take the same job in Johns Creek. He will earn $183,000 a year in the new role.

Hutmatcher, Dunwoody’s first city employee, will remain in Dunwoody until April 25.

Two construction projects to coincide

Decatur Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon admitted that two major construction projects surrounding Decatur High will likely coincide for most of the 2015-16 school year. The long-planned streetscape improvements on North McDonough Road reducing the corridor to two lanes, begins in summer, 2015, while additions to the high school – mostly new classrooms – could start around the same time.
