Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society will host Jim Lanford of the Coosawattee Foundation 7 p.m. April 25 for a lecture about the first inhabitants of Cobb County.
Participants will learn about significant archaeological sites and new discoveries in north Georgia and gain further understanding of the rich and complex history of its native people.

Association to sponsor college-to-career fair
The Georgia Association of Colleges & Employers will sponsor a free Department of Juvenile Justice college-to-career fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Cobb Galleria Centre, 2 Galleria Pkwy., S.E.
While the primary focus will be on juvenile correctional officers, teachers and registered nurses, a wide range of positions are available.

Acworth opens $240,000 playground
Acworth has replaced an older playground at Cauble Park on Lake Acworth with a $240,000 playscape for ages 2 to 12 .
The Marietta company Playworx Playsets built the nature-themed playground with slides, climbing rock and rope and tree climbing structures. The 2011 SPLOST funded project includes an adjacent pavilion available for public rental.

Big Shanty Festival set for April 20-21
The 37th Annual Big Shanty Festival will be held in downtown Kennesaw April 20-21. The two-day festival features more than 200 booths of crafters, artisans and vendors as well as live entertainment, children’s activities and more than 30 food booths.

Small business award winners announced

Lanier Tech gets new president
Ray Perren will be the next president of Lanier Technical College, under action the Technical College System of Georgia took last week.
Perren, the current president of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, will become the leader of Lanier Tech May 1. He replaces Russell Vandiver, who has retired.

Cumming roadwork may cause delays
The Georgia Department of Transportation is warning of extensive traffic disruptions today (Tuesday) as crews finalize the $1.5 million reconstruction of the intersection of Ga. 9, Mary Alice Park Road, Bald Ridge Marina Road and Meadow Drive in Cumming.

Roswell teen hit by car, killed on spring break
The funeral will be held Wednesday for James “Jamie” McHenry, 13, a student at Haynes Bridge Middle School in Roswell, hit by a car and killed last week while on spring break in Florida.
McHenry was crossing South Ocean Drive on Hutchinson Island, Fla., about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday when he walked into the path of a Chrysler driven by a 73-year-old Jensen Beach, Fla., man, the Palm Beach Post reported.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Johns Creek. Mike Morris
Sandy Springs man killed in bar shooting
Takilam Terrell, 34, of Sandy Springs was still alive when police discovered him in the parking lot of Milo’s Bar on Garrison Road. Terrell was taken to Kennestone Hospital but died following emergency surgery, Lindsey said.

Groups schedule annual river cleanup
The 3rd annual Sweep the Hooch multi-site cleanup is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The cleanup, in partnership with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited and National Park Service, will lead volunteers at 22 sites along the 48-mile stretch of the river through the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

CEO, judge host talk for high school girls
DeKalb County’s Chief Executive and a state Court Judge will host a free session 1 p.m. Wednesday in Courtroom 2A of the DeKalb County Courthouse designed to expose more high school girls to the criminal justice system.

DeKalb event Saturday to focus on teen violence
County leaders will host a teen talk show 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Porter Sanford performing arts center, 3181 Rainbow Dr. to discuss ways to combat teen violence.

PAWS Atlanta offering low-cost pet clinics
PAWS Atlanta, a DeKalb County animal welfare group, is offering weekly low-cost pet health clinics.
The group, formerly known as the DeKalb Humane Society, can provide spay-neuter services as well as vaccinations and pet dental cleanings.
PAWS Atlanta also runs a no-kill shelter of adoptable pets.

DeKalb County’s economic development office will host a bus tour Thursday of south DeKalb.

Brookhaven repairing school sidewalks
Work began Monday on the walkways around Woodward Elementary on Curtis Drive. Weather permitting, crews will also repair sidewalks around Montgomery Elementary on Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Construction to start soon at Beacon Hill
Demolition of Decatur's Beacon Hill/Trinity High site, originally scheduled to begin in February, has been moved to this month. College Park announced that Wade Elmore has been appointed fire chief effective immediately. Elmore previously served as interim and deputy fire chief for College Park Fire Rescue.
Elmore has a long career in fire suppression management. Fayetteville increases pavilion security
Following several recent robberies and thefts at the Fayette Pavilion shopping center, Fayetteville police and the center’s property managers are adding security measures.
