Historic black church hosts Herman Cain

WSB talk show host and 2012 Republican presidential contender Herman Cain, an ordained minister, will speak at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 20 at Old Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 731 Friendship Church Road, Powder Springs.

The church’s pastor, the Rev. Brendan A. Jenkins, also was licensed and ordained as a minister at Antioch Baptist Church North with Cain.

The oldest church in Cobb County, Friendship was founded in 1854 as a slave church on the same property where it is located now, Jenkins added.

Marietta gun safety seminar next week

The Marietta Police Department’s Training Unit will host a Firearm Safety Seminar 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Marietta City Hall Council Chambers, 205 Lawrence St.

The lecture-based seminar is designed for civilians, and will cover topics including safety, laws, and alternative weapon usage. Information packets will be provided.

The Duluth Police Department is beginning a Citizen Police Academy. Citizens are invited to apply and attend this free academy designed to introduce citizens to the various functions of police work. The thirty-hour course will begin January 23 and end on May 24, 2014. Lilburn Daze celebrates 40th anniversary

The Lilburn Daze Arts & Crafts Festival will celebrate its 40th anniversary 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 in Lilburn City Park. Louisiana man charged with Fulton robberies

Vincent Anthony Baiamonte III, 27, of Hammond, La.,was arrested Sunday night in Baton Rouge, La., and charged with the Sept. 30 armed robbery of a CVS store on Crabapple Road in Roswell, and the robbery the following morning of the Wells Fargo bank on Crabapple Road in Alpharetta.

In both robberies, the suspect was wearing a Harley-Davidson T-shirt.

Roadwork set on Cherokee highways

The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $4.1 million contract for safety improvements to Ga. 20 and Ga. 140 in Cherokee County.

The project will include improving signage and pavement markings on both highways, guardrails and edge line/centerline rumble strip installations.

Work is set to be complete by the end ofJune of 2014, but no start date has been set.

Marching band exhibition in Cherokee

The Etowah High School Eagle Band will host the 17th annual Cherokee County Band Exhibition 7 p.m. today at the school, 6565 Putnam Ford Road, Woodstock.

Marching bands from all of Cherokee County’s high schools will perform their halftime shows, as will the Reinhardt University Screaming Eagles Band.

Tucker to fund cityhood study

Tucker Together has become the latest cityhood group to raise enough money to fund a study to determine whether it should become a new city in DeKalb County.

Group director Michelle Penkava said the group reached its $30,000 goal in just one month and will soon hire the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University to create a financial and service study for the area.

At least three other cities, some with overlapping borders, are under review in DeKalb. Organizers for a city of Briarcliff, Lakeside and Stonecrest are also funding studies. April Hunt

Parks committee meets Wednesday

7th grader recognized for heroics

Lily Massey, a seventh grader at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, has been honored for her act of heroism during a house fire by firefighters from the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Station 8 and Station 1 and her principal, Jim Lee.

On June 24, Lily, age 12, awoke to the sound of a smoke detector and the smell of smoke. She alerted her parents, and everyone was able to escape the house without injury.

The house was a total loss.

At a school assembly, Lily was presented one of the fire department’s highest awards, the Life Saving Award for her act of heroism.

In addition, Lee gave Lily the IHM Hero Award for her quick actions and calm thinking. Nancy Badertscher

Household hazardous waste can be disposed safely 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 at the central transfer station, 3720 Leroy Scott Dr.

Examples of the waste to be accepted are aerosols, cleaners, paint, flammables, fluorescent lights, batteries, mercury and photo and swimming pool chemicals.

Senior home seeking donations of linen

Mountain View Personal Care Home is seeking donations for a linen shower that will take place 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at 3675 Kensington Road.

The facility is home to 32 seniors and needs new twin sheet sets, pillow cases, blankets and throws, mattress pads and comforters, along with bath towels and wash cloths. Items can be delivered at the shower or 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Fayette selects water engineering firm

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners has named CH2M Hill as the official “on call” engineering firm for the county’s water system. The selection was made from a group of nine companies that submitted bids.

Tri City Venture to be discussed Wednesday

Lake City, Morrow and Forest Park have formed a joint venture to develop an Opportunity Zone to offer tax credits to local employers who hire new workers.

The Tri City Venture has been in the works for more than a year as city managers in the three cities worked in conjunction with the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government.

It’s the first step in developing an alliance among the three cities that share common borders and demographics.

Officials and administrative staff in the three cities will hear a UGA presentation that is open to the public 4 p.m. Wednesday at Morrow Center, 1180 Southlake Circle in the Southlake Mall complex.
