Leaders invited to be ‘Principal for a Day’
Fulton County schools is inviting community leaders to become a “Principal for a Day” during the week of Nov. 12. It’s the fifth year of the programs intended to show the day-to-day workings of public schools by giving a select few “keys” for a day. The volunteer principals will assume many regular tasks, including attending staff meetings, parent conferences, classroom observations, and performing lunchroom and carpool duty. Jeffry Scott

Fundraising for Snellville K-9s ongoing
Project Paws Alive, a local nonprofit, is conducting a fundraiser to provide ballistic vests for Snellville Police K-9s.
These vests help protect the K-9s from gun shots, stabbings, and other blunt force trauma such as being kicked or punched while on duty. Each body armor vest donated by the nonprofit is custom manufactured to fit the body shape and size of each K-9 police dog.

Church to host HIV panel discussion
First Baptist Church of Smyrna will host a panel discussion about HIV in the church at 4 p.m. today at 1275 Church St. S.E., Smyrna. Current information on HIV transmission will be shared and a panel of medical professionals will answer questions. Other panel members will include the Rev. Reinhardt features exhibit on China
A “Year of China” photography and video exhibition is underway at Reinhardt University in Waleska. The exhibit features images of China and Tibet recorded by Reinhardt faculty, students and staff during trips. Each year, Reinhardt designates an area of the world for students to learn more about. CAU’s Hill scores teaching award
Barbara Hill, assistant professor in the School of Education at Clark Atlanta University has been awarded the 2012 Vulcan Teacher of Excellence Award, which is presented annually by Vulcan Materials Company.
Hill has been on CAU’s faculty since 2010 and has worked at various times for the Atlanta, Fulton and Clayton school districts.
Vulcan Materials Company has been a sponsor of the Teaching Excellence Awards since 1991 through the Georgia Foundation of Independent Colleges. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize. Ernie Suggs
Drew wins charter of year award
Atlanta’s Drew Charter School was named the 2012 Georgia Charter School of the Year by the Georgia Charter Schools Association. Drew was recognized for “academic excellence on standardized tests, operational sustainability and sound fiscal practices,” according to the association. The award includes a $50,000 grant.
