Speech therapist charged with Medicaid theft

A Cobb County grand jury Thursday charged Erika Robinson, owner of Speech Therepeze Inc., with improperly accepting more than $430,000 from the state-federal health care program, according a spokeswoman for the Georgia Attorney General’s Office.

The indictment alleges that Robinson, whose company worked with the Georgia Medicaid Program’s Children’s Intervention Services, used unlicensed therapists and billed for services on days patients were not treated. Robinson received payments from Georgia Medicaid totaling $438,622 from Jan. 2010 to Jan. 2012.

Austell supports Dobbins Chapel

Austell City Council joined other Cobb cities Monday by unanimously supporting the preservation the Historic Dobbins Air Reserve Base Chapel on Cobb Parkway.

They want the base to reroute a new patrol road around the 63-year-old chapel instead of through it. Enough funds weren’t raised to move the chapel that was dedicated in 1950 as a World War II memorial.

Powder Springs seniors hold sale

Cobb commissioners Tuesday will announce a free prescription drug discount program, the Coast2Coast Rx Card. Gwinnett hosts Veterans Day ceremony Sunday

Gwinnett County will host a Veterans Day ceremony 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville.

Local political leaders will participate, and Command Sgt. Maj. James Nelson Jr. of the Georgia National Guard will deliver the keynote address.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial is on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive, Lawrenceville.

North Berkeley Lake Road getting sidewalks

The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners has approved a pedestrian safety project including sidewalks, curb, gutter and improvements to the roadside shoulders along North Berkeley Lake Road west of Lakeshore Drive to Bush Road.

Tech Foundation Board receives state award

The Gwinnett Tech Foundation’s board of trustees received the designation of the “Role Model Board” award during the Technical College System of Georgia’s 2012 Leadership conference last month.

The Technical College Foundation Association’s designation recognizes that the Gwinnett Tech Foundation operates at the highest standard of legal and financial standards, and that its trustees are active and engaged in the foundation’s development initiatives.

The TCFA represents the 27 TCSG college foundations with over 600 trustees statewide.

Cherokee man dies after fall from ladder

A Canton man died Friday morning after suffering a head injury from falling off a 20-foot ladder.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home off White Road Friday morning after the man’s wife discovered him deceased in their yard. Barron Clarence Smith, 52, of Canton, apparently fell from a 20 foot ladder while trimming limbs from a tree.

No foul play is suspected. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Andria Simmons

Marietta man arrested in car break-ins

Cherokee County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested Angelo Rivens, 54, on Thursday on four counts of entering auto and 30 counts of credit card fraud following a month-long investigation.

The Marietta man allegedly broke into four vehicles parked at Hobgood Park in Woodstock between Oct. 12 and 17 stealing wallets and purses. The victims’ credit cards were used in Cherokee and North Cobb to buy electronics, household items and cigarettes. Andria Simmons

Governor Nathan Deal recognized a Cherokee County firefighter for heroism during a Governor’s Public Safety Awards ceremony in Forsyth, Ga. Sgt. EPS takes applications for grants

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is taking applications for $1.5 million that will be awarded in 2013 as small environmental justice grants of up to $30,000.

The grants enable non-profit organizations to conduct research, provide education and develop solutions to local health and environmental issues in communities overburdened by harmful pollution. Jury rules complex to blame for shooting

Nathaniel Polite will receive about $4.5 million from the owners of the Stone Bridge apartments for the injuries that left him paralyzed.

Apartment owner Double View Ventures and manager Westdale Asset Management is expected to appeal.

Polite was shot in 2009 as he walked along a path between the complex and a nearby store.

His lawyers argued the complex’s owner was negligent because it didn’t fence the area off or respond to other attacks along the trail. April Hunt

County hosts “Shred and Tread” today

In honor of America Recycles Day, DeKalb County will host document shredding and shoe recycling for residents 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the county’s Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive.

Sensitive documents will be shredded on-site free, though there is a five-box limit. In addition, residents can drop off old sneakers that can be recycled.

Decatur, Avondale merge boundaries

Decatur and Avondale Estates celebrate the merging of their boundaries noon today at the corner of Sam’s Crossing and East College Avenue. The ceremony is symbolic, giving the two cities a shared boundary for the first time.

Mom hit when shooter fires into apartment

Forest Park mother Ashle Teddleton was struck in the thigh by a bullet fired into her apartment on Saturday evening while she played board games with her son. Teddleton said she is thankful to be alive and happy her son wasn’t hit.

Police told Channel 2 Action News someone fired at least three shots through the patio window at the Laurel Pointe Apartments off Morrow Road near Forest Park.

All Clayton County Chick-fil-A, Dwarf House and Truett’s Grill restaurants are hosting a shoebox drive benefiting Operation Christmas Child through Friday.
