Ribbon cutting for community garden

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be 10 a.m. Thursday for the Green Meadows Preserve Community Garden, 3780 Dallas Highway, Powder Springs.

This event is hosted by University of Georgia Cobb County Cooperative Extension, Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs staff.

Master gardeners also will answer questions and provide gardening recommendations and educational programs.

The price for a four-foot by eight-foot raised-bed garden plot is $48 a year with garden soil provided. Seniors older than 65 may qualify for a discount. Plots will be leased on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Blood drives to honor 9/11 victims

The Georgia Chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA will host blood drives in Gwinnett from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 1-3 at the Mall of Georgia, 3333 Buford Dr., Buford and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1-2 at Discover Mills Mall, 5900 Sugarloaf Pkwy., Lawrenceville.

The events are part of the second annual "Muslims for Life," a nationwide campaign to collect 11,000 units of blood from Aug. 11 to Sept. 11 to honor victims of 9 /11 and reiterate that Islam values life.

Cherokee Sheriff seeks citizen feedback

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office invites citizens to take a law enforcement survey that will be used to help improve the agency's operations.

To maintain its national accreditation, the Sheriff's Office must survey citizens every three years. The survey will be available until Nov. 18. Burkhalter named to community board

The Fulton County Commission has appointed former state House Speaker Mark Burkhalter to the North Fulton Community Improvement District board. The CID, a self-taxing district, was formed by business leaders in 2003 to boost infrastructure and has invested more than $13 million in north Fulton.

Burkhalter served as House speaker and speaker pro tem during his 18 years in the General Assembly. He is currently a senior strategic advisor and independent consultant with McKenna Long & Aldridge law firm in Atlanta. Johnny Edwards

Cybersecurity forum held in Atlanta

The Department of Homeland Security last week held the Government Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams in Atlanta. Officials highlighted the federal government's cybersecurity protection and response responsibilities.

DHS hosted the forum Aug. 19-24 in conjunction with the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center's annual meeting. The event attracted more than 1,800 cybersecurity professionals from around the world.

Attendees worked together to better understand and manage computer security incidents and to encourage preventative security measures across government agencies. Andria Simmons
