Fulton details school SPLOST projects

The Fulton County school board detailed a few of the construction projects that will be funded by SPLOST IV, which Fulton voters passed last year and is projected to raise about $500 million.

Among the projects: A new elementary school planned for the College Park area in 2014; a replacement McNair Middle School is set for the 2014/2015 time frame; a new elementary school in North Fulton is planned for 2014-2015; a replacement Heard Ferry Elementary School in 2015, and a new South Fulton elementary school in 2016. County celebrates School Lunch Week

To celebrate National School Lunch Week, October 15-19, school cafeterias in Fulton County are hosting the “School Lunch – What’s Cooking?” campaign, which will feature activities including “Take Your Parents To Lunch Days.”.

This year schools across the nation are under new nutritional guidelines that give students a wider variety of healthy food choices. Parents can view school menus at www.fultonschools.org/dept/schoolnutrition/MenuCalendars.aspx and also see each food item’s nutritional content. Jeffry Scott

DeKalb commissioner: report tax abuse

After receiving several calls with questions and complaints, DeKalb County Commissioner Elaine Boyer said she is urging all residents to report abuse of the county’s homestead exemption.

The tax break is designed only for homeowners who are living in a property on Jan. 1 and using the home as their legal residence. It does not apply for rental property or vacant land.

Cobb NAACP Freedom Fund Gala set

The Cobb County NAACP has set its 31st annual Freedom Fund Gala for Oct. 27 at the Marietta Hilton Conference Center and Resort.

The gala will be hosted by co-chairs, Nelson Geter, executive director of the Cobb Development Authority and Mitzi Smith Moore, president of Sundial Plumbing Services. Ron Newcomb, president of Chattahoochee Technical College, will be the honorary chairman.

This year’s gala “Your Power, Your Decision, Vote,” gala will honor people positively impacting the Cobb community.

Marietta to host YWCA fun run

Northwest Georgia’s YWCA will host a Track or Treat Fun Run on Oct. 21 at Marietta High School. The event, the organization’s first, will raise funds for their Sheltering Hands Domestic Violence Shelter.

Registration begins at 1:45 p.m. and the race will start at 2:30 p.m. Organizers are encouraging participants to wear their Halloween costumes.
