Forum on charter amendment planned
State Rep. Roger Bruce, D-Atlanta, is hosting a forum on the pros and cons of the constitutional amendment on charter schools 10 a.m. today at Quality Living Services, 4001 Danforth Road. At least two local school superintendents have confirmed plans to attend.
Bruce, who represents parts of Fulton and Douglas County, said he opposes the amendment, but wants the audience to hear both sides. Nancy Badertscher
HUD discrimination claim settled
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that it reached an agreement with Brookside Park Limited Partnership and Peabody Properties South LLC, the owner and management company for Brookside Park Apartments in Atlanta, settling allegations that they violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to allow a tenant with disabilities to transfer to an available first-floor unit.
Federal law makes it illegal to discriminate in the terms and conditions of rental housing based on disability.
Under the agreement, the companies will pay the resident $10,000 and inform officers, board members and employees of the terms of the agreement.

Voter registration deadline looms
With Tuesday the deadline to register to vote before the November election, Fulton residents can pick up registration forms at:
Fulton County Government Center, 130 Peachtree St., S.W., Suite 2186, in downtown Atlanta;
North Service Center, 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs;
South Service Center, 5600 Stonewall Tell Road in south Fulton.
Forms can also be downloaded at at www.fultonelections.com.

GGC names new dean
Diane White, Georgia Perimeter College’s dean of Health Sciences since 2009, has been named dean of Georgia Gwinnett College’s planned School of Health Sciences.
White will formulate a bachelor’s program in nursing and seek its certification by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
The Lawrenceville school plans to begin nursing classes in its recently approved $25 million Allied Health and Sciences building by fall of 2014. MICHAEL ALPERT FOR THE AJC

CodeRED alert system okayed for Austell
Austell City Council Monday approved the CodeRED weather alert system with optional, free participation by residents.
The annual cost will be $4,920 from the city’s new stormwater management fund with an option for the city to cancel after one year.

Food trucks continue at Smyrna park
Smyrna’s City Council recently agreed to allow food trucks to operate at the city’s Taylor-Brawner Park, 3180 Atlanta Road, 5 - 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 20.
