Sundance Channel looks at Powder Springs
The Sundance Channel may be interested in filming a new TV series at the Gore Building in Powder Springs — just after the City Council voted Monday to tear it down to expand downtown parking. City Manager Brad Hulsey recommended Wednesday to city officials they may want to reconsider their vote since Sundance scouts seem to like the building’s paneled office and the city’s courtroom. Production on six one-hour episodes of “The Red Road” began in Atlanta on Aug. 19.

CNN’s Gupta helped treat Cobb sheriff
Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren was in famous hands while undergoing back surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, chief medical correspondent for CNN, was among the doctors treating Warren, who was injured last week in a wreck on I-75, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.
Warren was released from the hospital Wednesday. He underwent back surgery Monday to a repair a fractured vertebrae, the sheriff’s office said.

Hickory Street change orders approved
Powder Springs will spend about $21,000 more to resurface Hickory Street near New Macland Road for the first time in 40 years. Of that amount, $5,500 will be to replace the storm drain pipe. The original cost was $96,402 for Proterra Limited Co. that was approved by the City Council in June.

Qualifying period nears for Cumming election
Qualifying for the municipal election in Cumming has been set for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Aug. 30 at the city clerk’s office, 100 Main St.

Cherokee elementary wins statewide award

Cumming mayor will run again
Longtime Mayor H. Ford Gravitt announced this week that he’ll seek another term in office. The 71-year-old Gravitt was first elected in 1970, and served on the city council for four years before that.

The Democratic National Committee is set to vote on whether to add Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to its executive committee.

A boil water advisory is in effect in the Tucker area, the DeKalb County Watershed Division said Wednesday.
A temporary fluctuation in water system pressure could pose a health hazard, the county said.

19 offices promoted, 25 others honored
DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander recently recognized 19 officers who have been promoted to the rank of sergeant or above.
In addition to those who earned promotions, the department honored 25 detectives and officers in the major felony unit for their day-to-day work.

DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson has been re-appointed to head the Health Steering Committee of the National Association of Counties.

DeKalb senior group honors volunteers
Senior Connections, a nonprofit that serves senior citizens in DeKalb and Fulton counties, recently honored its top volunteers for their service to the organization.
Jim Story was named volunteer of the year for his work in driving meals to shut-ins every day. He has logged nearly 5,900 miles serving the Decatur area daily.

Saturday services set for Creekside football player
Services have been set for De’Antre Turman, the Creekside High School 11th-grade football player who died Friday night after being injured during a scrimmage. Early voting expanding in Stockbridge
Early voting for the November elections will be expanded this year in Stockbridge. An agreement with the city and the county’s election department will allow a second week of early voting at the Ted Strickland Community Center beginning Oct. 19. The polls will be open two Saturdays. The city will pay $5,000 to offset the additional costs involved. Early voting at the McDonough election headquarters for all Henry County voters begins Oct. 14. City Council seats will be on the ballot in all four cities as well as the mayor’s post in Hampton, McDonough and Stockbridge. A county SPLOST referendum is also likely to be on the Nov. 5 ballot. Fayette County continues growth
Fayette County has seen an average annual growth of 2,188 residents since 1990, according to figures released by the Atlanta Regional Commission.
The county’s biggest growth spurt occurred between 1980 and 2010, due to rapid development in Peachtree City.
Growth slowed to only about 544 residents per year between 2010 and 2013, but Fayette added approximately 700 new residents from April 2012 to April 2013. Jill Howard Church for the AJC
