Plans to replace the 50-year-old Lake Peachtree spillway will proceed now that the City Council of Peachtree City has approved preliminary funding.

The council voted 5-0 Thursday to spend $300,000 from general fund cash reserves for the initial design phases, and will designate another $215,000 closer to completion. Fayette County will pay $2 million of the project. Randy Bass of Schnabel Engineering said the new spillway will fit in the same space off McIntosh Trail but will meet Category I specifications for greater capacity. The design is expected to be done by December, with construction starting in late 2017 and completed by June 2018.
