Recent thefts of cooking oil have some restaurant owners boiling mad.

After a recent string of thefts in Rockdale County, Conyers police officers are stepping up efforts to catch those responsible.

The thefts generally occur late at night, after the restaurants have closed, Conyers police said Friday.

"Officers are aware of the issue and are actively patrolling the areas," police said in a statement.

Companies that pick up the used cooking oil should have information clearly displayed on their tanks, police said. Restaurant owners are advised to be mindful of the level of oil in tanks and when it is scheduled to be picked up.

Cooking oil can be used to fuel some automobiles, which makes it valuable as fuel prices rise. In December, someone stole 300 gallons of used cooking oil from the tank behind The Whistle Stop Café on Barrett Parkway, Cobb County police said.

Anyone with information about oil thefts is asked to contact Conyers police at 770 483-6600.
