Community holds fundraiser for Cobb teen injured in bubble soccer game
Community members assembled Sunday to support a Cobb high school student seriously injured in a game of bubble soccer.
Salvador “Chava” Reyes was celebrating the end of the Campbell High School soccer season with his teammates when he collided with another player, causing a traumatic head injury.
On Sunday, a community fundraiser at Campbell High School brought out supporters to help pay for medical expenses and to support Reyes and his family through a difficult time.
"I know a lot of times it's hard for us to be patient, but with things like this we don't really have any control. So that's all we can be is just patient." sister Ruby Reyes said.
Kids who were on the field when Reyes was hurt say the whole point of bubble soccer is to be safe.
"Nobody knew how to react," student Angel Gonzalez said. "It was a hard hit."
The injured teen was just two weeks from graduation when the accident happened.
The 18-year-old's family said he is able to talk from his bed at Kennestone Hospital.
Several charity soccer games have been scheduled to help raise money for the teen's medical bills, and a GoFundMe page for Reyes had earned more than $19,700 as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
