The multi-denominational group, Create Community 4 Decatur: Black Lives Matter, hosts a program honoring the nation’s shooting victims, both civilian and police, 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Decatur’s square.
“This has been a divisive year,” said the Rev. Brady Radford, one of the group’s founders. “One way to try and make sense is to offer multiple perspectives from people of different faiths speaking the truth as they know it.”
The collective has mostly flown under the radar, especially compared to the city-sponsored initiative, “Better Together,” which produced a 21-page community action plan in December.
But it has met every month since December 2014, and appears to be gathering momentum. Thirty-five attended last week’s meeting — nearly an equal mix whites and blacks including members from several area churches — and 75 in July.
Create Community is associated with neither the city, nor despite its name, the organization Black Lives Matter.
“We started because we believe the faith community shouldn’t be silent,” Radford said.
