The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved one controversial rezoning case, but delayed another Tuesday night.
Commissioners green-lighted the request of Speedway to rezone 1.7 acres at the corner of Ga. 92 and Neese Road from residential to general commercial on a 3-1-1 vote. The company wants to build a gas station and convenience store.
Commissioner Scott Gordon opposed it, noting there have been concerns about its proximity to a senior living project being developed. Other concerns have centered on traffic, lighting and noise, as well as alcohol sales close to a church.
The property’s located in commissioner Ray Gunnin’s district. He voiced support, noting the applicant has agreed to such measures as a 35-foot buffer separating it from residential areas, limiting delivery hours to the morning and providing specialized lighting to reduce glare.
Also, commissioners again tabled a request by Pinebrook Estates LLC to rezone 11 acres on East Cherokee Drive from general commercial to residential, as a compromise is being worked out addressing neighbors‘ concerns. The planning commission had recommended denial.
