A Collins Hill High School varsity athlete was booked into the Gwinnett County jail on Tuesday on vehicular homicide and other traffic charges in connection with an April wreck that killed his father.
Amadi Stephens, 17, was driving the family’s 1996 Ford Explorer the afternoon of April 20 when he lost control of the SUV in a curve and ran off the right side of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, according to a Gwinnett police incident report on the crash.
Several witnesses told investigators that Stephens over-corrected twice, and the SUV rolled over.
The teen’s father, Bruce Stephens, 51, was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report, and was ejected through the windshield of the overturning vehicle. He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The report stated that Amadi Stephens did not have a driver’s license and his father’s license had been suspended for failure to appear in court on a seat belt violation and for driving on a suspended tag.
Gwinnett police charged Amadi Stephens with second-degree vehicular homicide, driving without a license and failure to maintain lane. He was released from jail on $4,250 bond.
The junior plays wide receiver and defensive back on the Collins Hill football team, according to the team’s website. He is also on the varsity basketball team.
