Gone is 2015 and the warmest December ever in metro Atlanta. The new year will usher in colder, more seasonable weather, including lows around the freezing mark.

At least it won’t be raining.

The last weekend before it’s time to return to work and school following the holiday break will be filled with mostly sunny skies, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz. It will be great weather for those looking to get outside. And if you have to be stuck in a car, weather shouldn’t affect travel. A look at what’s going on this weekend:

Construction on hold: Drivers can thank the Georgia Department of Transportation for halting construction-related lane closures over the New Year's Day weekend. But don't expect expect lonely travels on metro interstates. While many who spent the holidays elsewhere will be returning home, other visitors in town will be heading out.

Last year, 10 people were killed and 319 injured in 724 crashes during the New Year’s holiday weekend, which began at 6 p.m. Thursday and runs through midnight Sunday, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Uniting for Jesus: As many as 22,000 young adults ages 18-25 are expected to attend Passion 2016, a religious conference. Events are scheduled Saturday and Sunday at both Philips Arena downtown and Infinity Energy Center in Duluth.

Saints come marching in: Neither team will make the NFL playoffs. But the Atlanta Falcons will seek revenge against New Orleans, 31-21 winners when the teams met earlier this season. This time, the Falcons will on their home turf in a 1 p.m. game at the Georgia Dome.
