The new Early Kindergarten program in the Cobb County School District began May 31 for 22 children at Belmont Hills Elementary School in Smyrna. If deemed successful by CCSD administrators, the program may be added to other CCSD schools next summer.
Success will be determined by testing the children’s reading skills at the beginning, middle and end of the six-week summer program and, in comparison to kindergarten students who begin school on July 31, at the beginning and end of the 2017-18 academic year.
“Our focus is on academic preparedness,” said CCSD Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. “Our job is to make sure we move students from kindergarten through first grade. We are making sure the students who are coming to Early Kindergarten are getting access to early learning. We have a goal to have students reading on grade level by third grade. This is another tool we are using to obtain that goal.”
