The Cobb County Board of Education voted 4-3 last month to table a decision on rebuilding the Clay/Harmony Leland Elementary School in Mableton until 7 p.m. June 25, 514 Glover St., Marietta.

Board member Susan Thayer, who made the motion to table, said, “We all agree that a new elementary school is needed in South Cobb when you look at the growth and the age of the buildings.”

However, she said “something more concrete” is needed than board member and Harmony Leland parent David Morgan’s motion to designate $5 million from the unassigned fund balance to begin accumulating the $30 million needed.

In addition to Thayer, voting to table were David Banks, Scott Sweeney and Vice-Chairman Brad Wheeler.

Besides Morgan, opposed to tabling were Chairman Randy Scamihorn and David Chastain.

During the May 13 work session, Morgan recalled, “In SPLOST, the community felt the rebuild was going to happen and it did not happen. We need to take extraordinary steps to make sure that we fulfill that commitment.”
