Drones will continue to be allowed in Cobb until further review is completed.
The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday to request staff to consult with the Federal Aviation Administration on how language should be worded in the county code.
Commissioner Bob Ott, a pilot, said the proposed language is “too broad” that would have prevented drones from within a mile of “any sports venue.”
Cobb County International Airport-McCollum Field in Kennesaw and Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta already are protected from drones by the FAA within a five-mile radius.
The aim of the proposed code change was to restrict the air space over the new SunTrust Park for the Atlanta Braves and Kennesaw State University’s stadium with a ban of “unmanned aerial systems” within one mile of both venues in addition to all sports venues in the county, said Dana R. Johnson, director of Cobb’s Community Development Agency which brought forth the 85 pages of county code changes.
