A new fire station will be built at Cobb County International Airport – McCollum Field.

The initial phase was approved recently by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners by paying $54,250 to Croy Engineering for the station’s site plan design.

Currently, the Cobb County Fire Department provides fire and rescue services to the airport, using structural firefighting vehicles assigned to Fire Station 8, which is located off airport property near the airport’s southwest end.

In late 2016, the fire department presented the commissioners with a five-year strategic plan, including this new fire station.

This full-time airport firefighting unit will include a specialized airport crash/foam firefighting vehicle and the fire department’s Hazardous Materials Team, which is currently located at Fire Station 8.

The scope of this project includes determining the suitability of the proposed airport site for construction of Fire Station 31 by producing an airspace study and preliminary access and utility plans and developing feasible schematic site plan alternatives and a grading plan to allow both departments the opportunity to stockpile construction material on site as needed.
