Soon after she was hired to work for the Fulton County District Attorney, April McConnell found herself working on the office’s biggest case in years, the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal.

The promising assistant district attorney, currently listed in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital after being shot Friday, has built an impressive resume in a short time.

The Emory University Law School graduate, a few months shy of her 32nd birthday, didn’t set out to become a lawyer, according to her LinkedIn profile. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University, McConnell worked with Best Buy before becoming membership director of the Metro Atlanta YMCA, where she also coordinated marketing and fundraising efforts.

In 2011, she married Tranard McConnell. A former employee at Morehouse College, McConnell is, according to his LinkedIn page, a human resources manager with PVH, a global clothing company.

April McConnell’s father, Kevin Ross, is a former attorney and well-known Atlanta public relations executive.
