An Athens woman woke up to a nightmare. She told police a man tried to kill her and threatened her with a machete.

On Saturday, Farrahsha Lumpkin, who lives in a mobile home community on Winterville Road, said she was sleeping and was awakened by a man, whom she knew, trying to choke her. He allegedly said he wanted to kill her, Lumpkin told police.

The woman fought her assailant and was able to break free when he reached behind his back and picked up a machete. Lumpkin ran to a neighbor’s home where she called police.

The man ran off before Athens-Clarke County police arrived.
