The Cherokee County School District has a new superintendent. School board members unanimously approved Brian Hightower’s appointment at a special called meeting late last week. He’d previously been named sole finalist for the job.
Hightower has spent 29 of his 30 years in the education field with the district, working his way up from classroom teaching to his most recent position as deputy superintendent of school operations, programs and support.
Board chair Kyla Cromer said board members were swayed by Hightower’s educational background which includes a doctorate in education from Samford University, as well as by reviews from colleagues calling him a professional and hard-working problem-solver. Educators from four states applied for the job.
Hightower will succeed retiring superintendent Frank Petruzielo effective Feb. 1.
