The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has awarded a $1.59 million contract to Studio 8 Design for architectural and engineering services for the renovation and expansion of the Adult Detention Center in Canton.
The center, at 498 Chattin Drive, has a 512-bed detention facility completed in 2002, and a 96-bed jail dating to the early 1980s, according to the county’s request for proposals. Studio 8 was one of seven firms that responded to the RFP, and one of four finalists interviewed for the job, staff said in a report to commissioners.
According to the RFP, the architect will provide such materials as biddable documents, plans and specifications, construction documents and construction contract administration services.
The project will include new medical housing, secondary kitchen and secondary laundry, and renovations to existing facilities including the main lobby. Its estimated budget is $40 million. Construction documents are to be completed by the summer of 2019, with construction expected to take 18 to 24 months.
