The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has given the green light to adding three sand volleyball courts to Badger Creek Park in Canton.

The Cherokee Soccer Association has an agreement with the county, dating to November 2010, to use Badger Creek for soccer, staff said in a report to commissioners. Any other use of the soccer fields must have written county board approval.

S3 Volleyball approached the soccer group and the county, seeking to construct, maintain and program three sand courts at the park.

The group would construct the courts in a location that will not impact the soccer association’s use of the park, staff said. No county funds are sought.

“The county currently has no sand volleyball courts in our parks,” staff said. “This project would allow Cherokee County residents an opportunity to participate in sand volleyball without having to travel outside the county to do so.”

Construction of the courts will be subject to the review and approval of the county.

S3, the Southern Select Sand Volleyball Club, seeks to "produce and train a very select and successful group of beach volleyball players," according to the website of the Cartersville-based organization. "We are the only volleyball court in the state fully dedicated only to the sand game."
