The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved donating to Gilmer County a 1997 fire safety house trailer used in fire prevention and educational programs.

The trailer was no longer needed for Cherokee’s fire prevention program, as the county acquired a newer trailer with the 2017 merger of the Canton Fire Department into Cherokee Fire & Emergency Services, staff said in a report to commissioners.

“If sold at auction, this trailer would likely bring less than $5,000,” staff said. “The Fire Department wishes to donate the trailer to Gilmer County so it can continue to be used to serve the surrounding community.”

Charlie Paris, chairman of the Gilmer County Board of Commissioners, had written a letter to Cherokee Fire Chief Tim Prather, saying his county had been unsuccessful securing a grant for a fire safety house, and asking Cherokee to consider donating “a valuable asset in teaching children about fire safety.”
