The deadline for paying ad valorem property taxes in Cherokee County would be moved up to Nov. 15 from Dec. 20 beginning in 2018 under a proposal being considered by the county Board of Commissioners.
The board Tuesday set a May 2 public hearing for the Tax Commissioner’s office on changing the due date.
The change addresses concerns of the Cherokee County School District, which must borrow money every fall, in the form of a tax anticipation note, while awaiting the tax revenues; and to put some distance between when taxes are due and the holidays, said County Manager Jerry W. Cooper.
Most metro Atlanta counties have property tax due dates earlier in the fall. Cherokee’s new deadline would not apply to this year’s tax collection.
