Prompted by concerns of citizens during the 2018 Comprehensive Plan Update, Cherokee County commissioners have approved a $31,500 contract to have a consultant analyze the housing market and identify future needs.
“We hear a lot about the need for affordable housing,” Cherokee County Board Chairman Harry Johnston said at a recent commissioners meeting. “This, among other questions, the study will attempt to scientifically quantify – how much housing is there, how much is needed.”
Bleakly Advisory Group will analyze Cherokee County’s housing supply, demand and corresponding needs countywide, in unincorporated areas and in the cities of Ball Ground, Canton, Holly Springs, Waleska and Woodstock, according to the consultant’s proposal.
The study will identify “gaps between future housing demand and the current supply,” Bleakly said. Among the concerns are the narrow price band for present single-family housing production, accommodating the growing senior population, and having quality rental properties near new jobs, services and other amenities.
