Responding to residents’ concerns about driver visibility on Union Hill Road, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has directed its consulting engineer to add to plans for the Canton Creek bridge replacement project.

Commissioners amended their agreement with Heath & Lineback Engineers Inc. to have the consultant design sight-distance and operational improvements for Union Hill and Hasty Trail, which meet in a T-intersection north of the bridge. The change will cost $23,300 in additional design fees.

A property owner and the Garrison Farms Homeowners Association expressed concerns about motorists’ ability to see ahead approaching the intersection, staff said. The county had another engineering consultant, Pond & Co., do an analysis.

Pond recommended that the county acquire the necessary sight distance easement, remove vegetation along Union Hill, re-grade the slope, remove a subdivision entrance sign on one corner, and add a two-foot paved shoulder or curb and gutter along Union Hill from the new bridge to Hasty Trail, staff said.
