Cherokee County seniors who have dared not to venture out because of the COVID-19 pandemic will see food relief with the county’s acceptance of a $100,654 federal grant to provide them with prepared meals and boxes of groceries.
The county Board of Commissioners approved accepting the federal funds out of the Family First Act. The reimbursement grant does not require a local match, and it is intended to cover the costs of food for eligible seniors at least 60 years old, according to a staff report to commissioners.
“These emergency funds are intended to target the vulnerable population still sheltering in place,” staff said. “(Cherokee County) Senior Services will coordinate the purchase of prepared meal boxes from local restaurants and will reach out to area non-profits to help distribute non-prepared food boxes.”
The funds can be spent through September, 2021, "but the sooner they are spent, the better," staff said. Information: https://bit.ly/3e3je2g
