The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has awarded three bridge replacement design contracts totaling $264,100 to Heath & Lineback Engineers: Union Hill Road over Canton Creek and Mill Creek, and Lower Dowda Mill Road over Sharp Mountain Creek.

The engineering firm will identify right-of-way needs, geotechnical investigations, environmental permitting needs and utility conflicts, and prepare right-of-way plans and documents, according to Cherokee Public Works Director Geoffrey E. Morton.

Union Hill Road is a local collector and cannot be closed during construction, Morton told county commissioners. Cherokee plans to maintain traffic over the existing bridges while their replacements are assembled. After the new spans are open to traffic, the old ones will be removed.

The Lower Dowda Mill bridge is only one lane wide. Its replacement is to be two lanes, and the engineer will determine whether a new bridge or culvert is most effective. The road will be closed and a detour, provided, during construction.
