The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has voted to accept a $5,000 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to offset the costs of a cat hoarding case.
The ASPCA funds are to help the Cherokee County Animal Shelter in Canton care for the cats.
In July, authorities removed 129 cats from the home of Patrick and Megan Kuykendall in the 4300 block of East Cherokee Drive in Canton. The Kuykendalls were each charged with 129 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals – and one felony count of second degree cruelty to children – after authorities discovered the felines. Two dogs also were removed, as was the couple’s teen daughter.
A Cherokee marshal’s spokesman said officers found the home filled with urine and feces, and that the state Division of Family and Children Services removed the daughter because of poor living conditions.
