The Cherokee County Animal Shelter will receive heartworm and flea and tick medicine free of charge under an agreement approved by the county Board of Commissioners.

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc., Duluth, offered to provide the medicines free for shelter animals, and also a discounted rate for additional vaccines and medicines, staff said in a memo to commissioners. The agreement runs through Jan. 31, 2022.

The offer, County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners, is “in return for placing promotional materials in our office and with people who adopt our animals.”

The free medicines are NexGard and Frontline Gold for dogs and Frontline Gold for cats, for flea and tick protection; and Heartgard to prevent heartworm, according to the “Partners in Protection” participation agreement. Each product will be given as a single dose for a cat or dog admitted to and housed at the shelter, and is not for re-sale.

The Cherokee Animal Shelter is at 1015 Univeter Road, Canton.
