Criminal charges are pending against a tractor-trailer driver after a fatal accident on Ga. 316 Thursday morning, police said.

Killed in the 6:45 a.m. wreck at Hurricane Trail was 68-year-old Anvir Karim, of Dacula, said Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter.

The accident remains under investigation, and truck driver Latora Barrett, 34, of Columbia, S.C., faces charges in the accident, Ritter said in an e-mail.

The crash happened shortly about 6:45 a.m. when Karim, driving westbound in a Nissan Maxima, struck the eastbound tractor-trailer turning left onto Hurricane Trail.

The Maxima ended up wedged beneath the truck, Ritter said.

Gwinnett fire Capt. Eric Eberly said his department’s Technical Rescue Team used air bags and large timbers to raise the tractor-trailer off the ground and stabilize the truck. They then dragged the Nissan out from under the truck and cut Karim out of the mangled Maxima.

Karim was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition and later died, Ritter said.

The westbound lanes of the busy highway were shut down while the rescue operation was under way.
