Wednesday’s weather will be sunny and warm, but metro Atlantans could be facing a round of severe storms Thursday into early Friday.

The National Weather Service said thunderstorms are expected to develop along and ahead of a cold front that will push through the state from the west Thursday night.

“Confidence continues to increase that isolated severe storms will accompany this system, mainly in the form of a squall line with damaging winds,” the Weather Service said in a statement early Wednesday.

“Large hail and a few tornadoes will also be possible,” the Weather Service warned. In addition to the risk of wind and hail damage, “rainfall amounts will be heavy at times, especially across parts of north and west-central Georgia, where widespread 1 to 2 inches are expected,” forecasters said.

The Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has put all of Georgia under a slight risk for severe storms Thursday and Thursday night.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said the chance of rain Thursday is 70 percent, diminishing to 20 percent early Friday.

Wednesday will be sunny, with highs around 83 degrees, Minton said.

Afternoon highs will be in the mid-70s Thursday following a morning low in the low 60s. Friday will be a little cooler, with highs in the low 70s and lows in the 50s.

Minton’s outlook for the weekend calls for sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the 70s and lows around 50.

Thursday’s rain should bring some temporary relief for allergy sufferers. Atlanta’s pollen count continued to climb Wednesday, to a season-high 4,151 particles of pollen per cubic meter of air.
