City of Canton water and sewer rates will be going up 4.5 percent effective Oct. 1, as part of a series of annual increases approved earlier by the Canton City Council.

Under the schedule, the base water rate will rise from $11.90 to $12.44. Also, usage from 2,000-10,000 gallons will increase from $5.84 to $6.10 per thousand gallons; 10,000-15,000 gallons will go up from $6.99 to $7.30; and usage of 15,000 gallons and above will jump from $7.59 to $7.93.

The base rate for commercial water use will rise from $11.90 to $12.44, with the rate for usage of more than 2,000 gallons up from $5.84 to $6.10 per thousand gallons. The base rate for water irrigation will increase from $15.39 to $16.08, and usage above 2,000 gallons will jump from $5.84 to $6.10 per thousand gallons.

City engineer David Hatabian said the increase will help pay for the rising operating and maintenance costs of the city’s water and sewer system, including an expansion of the sewer plant set to be finished at the end of May 2016.
