With three council seat terms ending and the office of mayor open to contenders, the Canton City Council has approved qualifying dates and fees for the Nov. 5 municipal election.

Qualifying dates are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20; and 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 21, according to the council resolution. The non-refundable qualifying fee will be 3 percent of the total annual salary of the positions, or $360 for council members and $540 for mayor.

Voter registration deadline is Oct. 7 for the election and possible runoff. Early voting will begin 21 days before the election and can be done by mail or in person at the Cherokee County Elections and Registration office in Canton, or in person during the week of advanced voting. Advanced voting locations will be announced.

Canton’s mayoral race opened up when Mayor Gene Hobgood announced earlier this month that after three terms in office, he would not run for re-election. Terms for the Wards 1, 2 and 3 council seats also expire Dec. 31.
