Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton will be off-limits to public access for up to three months starting Oct. 5.

The closure’s being prompted by planned staff maintenance and inspection of the spillway gates at the dam, which is recommended by the gate manufacturer every five years. The process will close public access to the boat launching site near Bluffs Parkway and Fate Conn Road. That’s the only public access point on the reservoir.

Reservoir officials say before the inspection, staffers will lower the lake to seven feet below full pool, which will take about a month. The inspection will then take roughly a week, assuming no problems turn up. After that, water will be pumped from the Etowah River to refill Hickory Log, a process that’s expected to take one to two more months.

No specific date’s been set for resumption of public operations.
