The Canton City Council has selected an architect to design and provide construction management services for the much-anticipated northwest Canton fire station.

The council voted to pick Wiley/Wilson, the second lowest bid received in late March at $64,000. The firm outlined an 18-month construction process costing just over $950,000.

In April, the council tentatively picked Sutton Architectural Services but switched course after the city fire services committee met with Wiley/Wilson and lauded their experience, which includes work designing two Cherokee County fire stations. Mayor Gene Hobgood suggested that the city explore possibly tying into that work to save money on the Canton project.

Under an agreement inked with Cherokee County, the city will build the station and the county will staff it, and it will provide coverage for both northwest Canton and nearby county areas.
