While the rest of metro Atlanta enjoys the Labor Day holiday, Canton city government will be moving to its new home in the former Canton High School at 110 Academy St.

City Hall will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 3-4, and will reopen Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the historic, 1924 school building that Canton acquired in April from the Cherokee County School District.

The following services will relocate to Academy Street: Building & Safety Services, City Clerk, Communications & Outreach, Community Development, Engineering, Finance, Human Resources and the Utility Department. All public meetings will move to the new quarters starting Oct. 1. City Hall phone numbers and email addresses will remain the same.

The former City Hall at 151 Elizabeth St. — originally, the First Baptist Church of Canton — will serve as the new City of Canton Public Safety and Municipal Court Building. The municipal court remains on Elizabeth, while the police department will move from the old post office on East Marietta Street. Information: https://bit.ly/2wqLXe2

Canton High was the first public high school in Cherokee County until it was replaced by Cherokee High School in 1956. It then was Canton Elementary School until 1974. The building was considered for demolition in 1999 until community members, school alumni and the Cherokee County Historical Society successfully lobbied to save it.

The building was renovated and housed school district administrative offices until early this year.
