The Canton City Council has approved a $499,908 contract with the engineering consulting firm of Black & Veatch to draw up master plans for the city’s water and wastewater facilities.

The consultant is charged with preparing two engineering studies to guide the city’s future infrastructure growth – identifying such things as future capital improvements to the water and sewage systems. Black & Veatch’s reports are due eight months after it receives a notice to proceed.

Canton currently draws water from the Etowah River as its sole source of supply, treats it at the Canton Water Treatment Plant at 150 Bobby E. Bishop Drive and distributes it across a 28-square-mile area to about 8,500 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the city and Cherokee County, according to the Scope of Work for the project.

The city also maintains and operates 110 miles of gravity sewers, 26 miles of force mains and 32 lift stations. Sewage is conveyed to the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 1078 Marietta Highway. Improvements and modifications to the plant will increase its discharge capacity.
