The Canton City Council voted to approve a formal contract with architect Wiley-Wilson as the designer of the long-talked-about Northwest Canton fire station.

The firm will be paid $64,000 to design the facility, on which construction is tentatively set to begin in January. Under a deal struck with Cherokee County some months ago, the city will build the station, and it will be manned by county firefighters, protecting both Canton and neighboring county jurisdictions.

Mayor Gene Hobgood said the choice of Wiley-Wilson made sense. He said that with the firm already designing two stations for the county, the city project could be patterned after them to some degree as a cost-saver.

The council had picked Wiley-Wilson this spring, but held off on formalizing a contract pending its being vetted by city legal and fire officials.
