Canton police have announced a class in April designed for newly licensed and soon-to-be licensed teen drivers: “Traffic Stop With a Cop.”

The class is set for 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., April 21, at Canton City Hall. Attendance is limited to 30 students. To register online: https://bit.ly/2GOrMNv

Participants will learn what to do during a traffic stop, their constitutional rights, what to do in the event of an accident, the laws of a Class “D” license, how a citation affects one’s driver’s license and insurance, and the consequences of texting and driving.

Students also will get to experience a mock traffic stop as a driver, and then see the encounter from the officer's point of view. The class is recommended for those ages 14-19. Pizza will be served. Information: https://bit.ly/2DZM9BM

“We hope this education, along with good communication, are key components to keeping everyone safe during a traffic stop encounter,” said Police Chief Mark J. Mitchell. “Not only do we want those in attendance to know what to expect, but we also want anyone who leaves from a traffic stop with one of our officers to be treated fairly, respectfully and given a voice in the process regardless of whether they received a citation or not.”
