After months of back-and-forth, the Canton City Council has approved an intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County on the building and operation of the northwest Canton fire station.
Under the deal, the city will build the approximately $1 million facility at the entrance to the Laurel Canyon subdivision and will lease the building and property to the county. The county will operate it as Fire Station 9, which is being relocated from an outdated Cherokee County facility about one mile away, providing both county and northwest Canton coverage.
The agreement worked out by Canton and Cherokee County fire chiefs has yet to be acted upon by the county. The city council has been weighing construction bids to build the station.
