The Canton City Council Thursday night will vote on whether to demolish the first two dilapidated homes targeted under a blight mitigation program spearheaded by a former city councilman.

Demolition of the homes at 622 Elmwood and 610 E. Main streets follows a lengthy court process clearing the way for the city to gain the authority to have the properties razed.

Council members approved $63,000 to clear out dilapidated structures in November 2014. They followed that up in March 2015 with a redevelopment program under which property owners can get tax incentives for improving eyesores. It also allows the city to increase taxes on unsightly structures whose owners aren’t addressing code enforcement issues

The council meets at 6 p.m. Thursday at city hall, 151 Elizabeth St.
