A solution for traffic congestion at the Camp Creek Parkway/Interstate 285 intersection may be an $8 million diverging diamond interchange. At a meeting convened recently by the Airport West Community Improvement District Georgia Department of Transportation officials presented a model much like the traffic calming device at Perimerter Mall, Pleasant Hill Road and most recently Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
There is still research to be done, said GDOT officials. The process begins with surveying the bridge over I-285 in April and conducting a traffic analysis before school lets out for the summer. A concept report is expected to be ready by November. A public information open house is tentatively set for April 2016. And the project’s cost will be split 80/20 between federal and state transportation departments, with GDOT responsible for $1.6 million.
The Camp Creek Parkway DDI is expected to cost an estimated $8 million, and construction could begin as early as 2017 with a completion in 12 to 18 months.
DDIs have a unique travel pattern that shifts traffic to opposing sides as they cross over expressways, making it faster and easier to complete left turns to access interstates.
